Scrapped work and trying something different
While working on a project I like to pretend I'm developing it for a company and that I'll be having to lay out all the work I've done for them. Because of this I felt that it would be a good idea to try and push certain aspects even further to give more options for the direction of the project. I ended up almost regretting that decision in this project because it ended up contrasting the reason I wanted to focus on painting the Frontier and the colonisation of the west. It's something that hasn't really been portrayed in films and games for what it was. This era tends to be shown mostly as hot deserts and gun fights at noon and it's more of a Hollywood glits and glam way of seeing it. I wanted to show more of an accurate depiction of this era with a limited amount of exaggeration. So This is why I feel these two piece didn't work well for my project and why I left one of them just unfinished.
This is the one I left unfinished. At the time I wanted to push the design elements and make a settlement town look more interesting and built up. I realised pretty quickly that this just wasn't fitting into my project and that there was really no need for it. My other pieces have been focusing on mood and atmosphere and throwing some drastic designs into the mix felt like it would ruin it.
This is the second piece that I tried something different with. The original idea is that while exploring the vast wilderness of the west you could stumble upon natives and certain rituals and ceremonies while out exploring. I think the design language and scale was off in this one. It could have possibly worked if it was on a smaller scale and more accurate to history.
After these two experiment pieces of work I decided to keep on the path I was on before with my work. I wanted to try something new to see if it could push my project further in a different direction but what it ended up doing was helping me realise that I was happy with where my project was going and that I just needed more of it.
