further light study by adding in a character
For this piece I had two aims going in in mind;
I wanted to practice what I had learned from the previous
study. I also wanted to re create the piece I did for the Shawn Mooney inspired
painting using the style I normally work in.
I decided that I
would place a character into the study scene and expand the canvas. Doing this
allowed me to use the knowledge I had gained from that study to show how the
character would be lit in the scene with various lights and bounce lights
casting onto the figure. I made sure that the character was similar to the one
I had created in the Shawn Mooney inspired piece to make the test fair. I
wanted to have a looser style that matched the background study I had painted
previously. This also helped me to get back into the swing of painting loose
again as I had felt like it was gradually becoming more rigid. I made sure to
paint loosely in parts that I deemed not as important and defined the shapes and
added more colour/lighting to the areas that I wanted more attention.
In conclusion I feel like this gave me a further
understanding of painting characters in night scenes as I was able to pick out
easier what should be lit and what should be left in the dark. Having a looser
style helped to create more of an interesting design for the character. The
design wasn’t perfect, but I still feel it was a step in the right direction compared
to my previous painting of a similar character. I feel like painting loose
helps me to pick out shapes and experiment more, where as working more tight
hinders my freedom with the painting.
