I decided to do another study after the most recent coffee shop night study that I painted as I felt I learned a lot from that in comparison to just painting concepts all the time. I focused this study on a different time of day to paint so that I could learn more. I found it an interesting image to work from as it appears the dusk sky is causing a lot in the image to turn blue. I believe the main building is in fact a light shade of blue during the day time judging by the window frames however the time of day seems to be effecting this and exaggerating it further. I came to this conclusion as the buildings in the back are clearly white but have blue tones in the shadows as by this time of day it's alot cooler, especially in the shadows so they give off those blue tones. it's also evident in the road aswell. We know tarmac isn't that colour in the day so can safely assume the time of day and temperature is having an effect.
When painting this study I was still aiming to get looser with my brush strokes in areas it didn't matter such as the back ground and even then I wanted to test to see how loose I could be with the main subject matter and still have it be readable as a house. I knew I definitely needed to be more impressionist with the vending machine like objects and not get sucked into detailing it too much. In the original image they serve as the eye catching light source but don't offer the viewer anything interesting to really look at. The bright red letterbox stands out as it's a warm colour among a cold tones. I decided to slip more green tones into the painting to help compliment the red colour further as a way to help the image look more pleasing to the eye. The balance of red and green in the image up to that point was fairly matched and I find having the secondary weaker complimentary colour (in this case green) be used more than the stronger red would help the image be more pleasing to look at.
Lastly I added a cat just as a way to add some possible story to the study and to give the bottom dead space some interest. I gave the cat a red collar matching the letter box to again help sell the complimentary colours.
